    LJ crosspost b0rken - meh
It occurs to me that some of you read clivemurray.com exclusively through my crossposting to LJ.

Well recently I upgraded Wordpress to 2.2 and the crosspost plugin broke, so none of my recent updates are appearing on LJ. I might fix this, or I might not. I really don't have much time for LJ as a medium and even less for it as a community.

If you want to read my site, then hey! Why not come to my site? That is, after all, what it's for. If you really can't be arsed, then I am fully RSS-functioning, so you don't have to come if you don't want to. If you can't be arsed with even that, then... well, sorry it didn't work out.

Emergency first: I need to borrow a 4×12 guitar speaker cab this weekend, to collect on Saturday or Sunday and return Tuesday night. Can anyone who reads this help? It’s worth twenty sterling to you if you can. Mail me on “stuff” @ this domain.

Now the reason for this: my band are playing two gigs this weekend! Here are some details:

    Sunday 27th May
    Bar Monsta, Camden
on stage just after 9pm (headlining)
    entry is £6

    Monday 28th May (Bank Holiday)
    The Fountain, St. Leonards, Sussex
on stage around 4pm for 2 hours!
    entry is free

Hope to see you at one or both!

So I haven’t done the Wordpress upgrade yet. Yesterday I noticed that the theme I use had a newer version out, so I upgraded that instead. This will account for any slight differences noticeable from yesterday.

I’m hoping to get the actual Wordpress upgrade done today some time, though this is subject to having spare time around work stuff, so it may or may not happen.

    As you were.

I’m going to upgrade my Wordpress installation sometime soon, possibly today. This might mean things break horrifically.

Hopefully not, of course, but well… we’ll see.

    Do you know what’s good?

Peep Show is good, that’s what’s good. I borrowed a couple of my mate’s DVDs of it, and watched series 1, and it’s really really good.

    Now you know what’s good.

In the UK we’re immensely fortunate to have i) the BBC, ii) Sir David Attenborough (the second greatest living Englishman), and iii) some of the best wildlife documentary teams in the world. Some of the footage I have seen (and I’m sure we all have) over the years has been by turns heartwarming, awe-inspiring, downright creepy, occasionally bloodthirsty, but always always interesting.

See here, then, a recently captured piece of footage that is flying round the internet right now depicting a set-to between a pride of lions, a herd of buffalo, and a pair of opportunistic crocodiles. It does fall slightly into the bloodthirsty category, but then again, that is nature. What we have here is some South African safari guides showing some camcorder-toting American tourists around a safari park, and what you hear is their own commentary live as it happens.

For almost as long as I’ve had a website, I’ve had little randomised quotes that I like from songs popping up in various places. In the previous incarnation of clivemurray.com they were up in the header, in this version they’re over there in the sidebar. Look! Over there!

Well one of these is from a Wildhearts song called “29x The Pain”, and it goes “Where you hiding, Richey James?”. I was introduced to the Wildhearts by an old flatmate, Dave The Goth. He lent me his Wildhearts’ Greatest Hits album, which I um… still have. Anyway, I grew to love most of the songs on there, and “29x The Pain” was one of the best.

Some time after I had entered that lyric into the list of quotes (there are 113 at the moment) I heard the song on the radio and listened out for that particular line - most of the song consists of namechecks to Ginger’s influences, so it can be hard to pick a particular one out - but even though I was concentrating on each line as it went by, I couldn’t find the Richey James reference.

I thought no more of it for some time, deciding that I must have just been distracted at the critical… ooh look, a bee!

But then this exact event happened again, and I became mildly freaked out. I went home and listened to my version of the song and sure enough, there it was. I wasn’t imagining it. And until today I have simply assumed that on both occasions I must have lost concentration at the crucial moment.

Happy was I, then, to discover just now that there are two recordings of the song, and the line in question is only in one of them.

    Phew.

    Tis the season… for Rock!

Originally published at clivemurray.com. Please leave any comments there.

It occurred to me yesterday that Velvet Revolver must be due a second album soon, and sure enough a quick look around turned up “Libertad“, due out on 2nd July. All well and good, and as long as it turns out to be better than a couple of other disastrously awful second albums I could name, I shall be voting with my English pounds at my earliest convenience.

Additionally, in finding this out, I discovered a few more albums coming out that may be of interest to people of my ilk. Poison (original line-up, sadly) are releasing an album of covers, indicating that the creative well truly has run dry. Still, it might be interesting - it’s called “Poison’d” if you’re bothered. I was highly gratified to see that Megadeth are still cranking them out too, and their latest offering “United Abominations” will surely grace a CD player near me sometime in the not-so-distant. The inimitable Ozzy has a new one coming out entitled “Black Rain“, though personally I’m going to try before I buy on that one.

But by far the biggest thrill for me was seeing this on play.com, complete with release date. It cannot possibly live up to the expectations, but as long as we remember that, and also keep in mind the constant line-up changes and egomania involved, we might get something enjoyable at the end of it. So set your alarm clocks for 17th of September.

Oooh, you know, she was in that thing… with the other guy…

Originally published at clivemurray.com. Please leave any comments there.

I have an extremely good memory for names and faces. So good in fact that when I was at a conference recently, I saw a guy who I recognised and managed to work out that he was from my home town, and that his surname was Jones. He went to the same school as me when I was 10 or 11 or so, but in the year below me. I’d never even spoken to him, but still my brain managed to pull him out of the database. Of course, I naturally had to go and do the “Excuse me, are you originally from Eastbourne? Thought so.” bit. Freaked him out somewhat, as I knew it would.

So the other day I was watching “Silent Hill” on DVD, and thoroughly enjoying it. Then an actress came along who I knew I recognised, but could not for the life of me place where from. This continued to bug me throughout the film, so when it ended I looked her up in the credits. Turned out I didn’t know the name, so I figured I must have just seen her in something else, but still it irritated me that I couldn’t remember what.

Then on Monday night I was watching TV with Saffron, and we happened to watch an episode of the Amanda Redman/Dennis Waterman[1] series “New Tricks” and damn it if the same thing didn’t happen again. There was this actress who I knew I’d seen in something before, but couldn’t place where. Again it bugged me to the end of the show, but this time I didn’t even remember to look up her name.

Fast forward to lunchtime today when I remembered both these events, and realised that I had an intarweb to hand. Within 30 seconds I had the first one nailed - the actress from Silent Hill was Alice Krige, and I had previously seen her in “Star Trek: First Contact” in which she played the Borg Queen. Easy.

The second one proved harder to nail, but I eventually discovered that the part of Hannah in New Tricks, series 2, episode 5, was played by Georgina Rylance, who I had previously seen in “Poirot - The Mystery of the Blue Train“.

    The internet’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

Awesomely, we present The 86 Rules of Boozing.

This led me, on reading rule #79, to look up the term “86′d” (or eighty-sixed). Dictionary.com says, “To refuse to serve (an unwelcome customer) at a bar or restaurant,” which certainly fits the context. Reference.com has a few more things to say, most relevantly this: Possibly a reference to article 86 of the New York state liquor code which defines the circumstances in which a bar patron should be refused service or “86ed”.

    So now you know. :-)
